Annual Respondents Database 2
The Annual Respondent Database 2 dataset is a research dataset covering the years 1998 to 2008. The Annual Respondent Database 2 was created using the older Annual Business Inquiry.
Annual Respondents Database 2 (ARD2) is a research dataset covering the years 1998 to 2008. ARD2 is created using the older Annual Business Inquiry (ABI; 1998 to 2008).
The ABI data was collected on the SIC 03 basis and this dataset has been converted to SIC 07 to ensure consistency with the Annual Business Survey (ABS) which replaced the Annual Business Inquiry in 2009 onwards.
The employment data in this dataset is collected from the ABI1 survey, which in 2009 became the Business Register Employment Survey. The work carried out in the ARD dataset ensures data is consistent with ABS for all years.
The data for ABI and ABS are collected and organised at the reporting unit (RU) level. This reflects the smallest collection of local units able to provide the information required. In most cases, these will be LUs carrying out the same activity.
Around 95% of the RUs in the ONS data have only one LU, they are single-site businesses.
ARD2 consists of two types of files:
- respondent files which have reported and derived information from survey questionnaire responses
- universe files which contain limited information on all business that are within scope of the ABI survey.
There is also a register panel containing all RUs observed over the period in one file.
The ARD is an historic version which was constructed from the ABI and various other predecessors to the ABS. The ARD2 is now superseded by the ARDX dataset, which uses the same data from the Annual Business Inquiry (1998 to 2008) and carries out the same purpose of cleaning and collecting the data to create a dataset that is consistent with the Annual Business Survey (2009 onwards).
All data hosted on the Integrated Data Service (IDS) are de-identified.
