Birth registrations in England and Wales

Includes information recorded when live births and stillbirths are registered as part of civil registration, a legal requirement in England and Wales.

This dataset includes information recorded when live births and stillbirths are registered as part of civil registration, a legal requirement in England and Wales.

The registration of births is a service carried out by the Local Registration Service in partnership with the General Register Office (GRO). All registered births are included, except very late registrations received more than 14 months after the end of each reference year (there are fewer than 100 of these for any given year).

The dataset has been disclosure control checked and includes a wide range of variables that provide information about the newborn, their parents, and the registration process itself.

Overall, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) births registration data is an important source of information for understanding population trends and for informing policy decisions related to:

  • healthcare
  • education
  • areas affected by changes in the population
