Annual Foreign Direct Investment Survey, UK
The Annual Foreign Direct Investment Survey collects data from businesses on foreign direct investment (FDI) flows to foreign countries, and from abroad to the UK.
These datasets are the microdata which underpin the Office for National Statistics (ONS) foreign direct investment (FDI) statistics, which focuses on when a cross-border investment is made with the objective of establishing a lasting interest in the host economy.
FDI is defined by influence relationships, where a direct investor (parent company) controls at least 10% of the voting power (ordinary shares) of the direct investment enterprise. The control can be measured in two directions: outward and inward. Outward refers to the direct investments of UK-resident companies in other countries, while inward refers to the direct investments in the UK from non-resident companies.
All data hosted on the Integrated Data Service (IDS) are de-identified.
