About the Integrated Data Service (IDS) : Overview

The Integrated Data Service (IDS) is a cloud-based Trusted Research Environment (TRE).

TREs enable accredited researchers and analysts to access data in a secure way.

These data are then used on research projects that inform vital decision-making and improve public services.

A transformative service

The IDS is changing the way data about our society and economy are made available for vital research in the UK.

It is a platform that provides access to improved data, analytical and visualisation tools, in a secure multi-cloud infrastructure.

This means that users can work together to produce analysis that addresses major societal challenges at pace.

Access to the IDS is only allowed within the UK.

A cross-government service

The IDS is a cross-government service, with the Office for National Statistics (ONS) (opens in a new tab)  leading on its delivery.

The ONS is the largest independent producer of official statistics in the UK.

For over 20 years, the ONS has managed the Secure Research Service (SRS) (opens in a new tab)  a globally recognised Trusted Research Environment (TRE).

The ONS is working closely with partners across government, the devolved administrations, and the external research community, to deliver the IDS.

Its development is an important step in achieving the aims of the government’s National Data Strategy (opens in a new tab)  and the roadmap for digital and data from 2022 to 2025 (opens in a new tab)
