Census 2011 origin-destination flow, England and Wales

The 2011 Census origin-destination tables comprise the travel-to-work and migration patterns of individuals, cross-tabulated by variables of interest.

Origin-destination data, also known as flow data, shows the flows of people from one place to another.

Flow tables show basic flows between areas, univariate tables, and cross-tabulate flows with one other variable. Multivariate tables cross tabulate flows with more than one variable.

There are four types of origin-destination data for the 2011 Census:

  • Special Migration Statistics - shows the migration patterns (both internal and international) on their location one year prior to Census Day (27 March 2011)
  • Special Workplace Statistics - shows the commuting of individuals
  • Special Residence Statistics - provides information on the location of second residence in relation to an individual's usual residence or workplace
  • Special Student Statistics - shows the migration patterns of individuals living at student addresses one year prior to the Census

All data hosted on the Integrated Data Service (IDS) are de-identified.
